I believe our borders must be secure, but “Alligator Alcatraz” is the wrong way to do it. This project is already facing two lawsuits: one for violating migrants’ civil rights, and another for breaking environmental laws that have protected Florida’s land and waterways for over 55 years. A federal judge has already halted further construction because of these environmental violations.
On top of that, this boondoggle is draining $450 million in Florida taxpayer money for something that is supposed to be a federal responsibility. Instead of fixing our state’s real problems, Tallahassee is wasting another $50 million on a political stunt suing Snapchat.
That is half a billion dollars gone. This money could have been used to create a Florida Hazard Insurance Fund to cover hurricane damage for every homeowner. That would mean insurance companies only cover fire and theft, driving housing costs down for working families and retirees across the state.
We deserve solutions that protect our wallets and our environment, not costly political sideshows.
